Lamplighter
The scoreboard keeps itself.
Coming soon
Somebody is always stuck operating the scoreboard. Lamplighter is an iPhone app for youth baseball and softball that follows a game as it's being scored and keeps the board matching it — score, hits, errors, inning, and the balls-strikes-outs count — so everyone can watch the game instead.
It talks to the scoreboard over Bluetooth. Nothing is rewired and nothing is permanent: the phone goes in a pocket, and the board carries on being an ordinary board when the app isn't running.
What it handles on its own
- Follows the game as it is scored, with nobody entering anything twice.
- Paces itself to what the hardware will actually accept, rather than flooding it.
- Repairs missed updates on a timer, so a dropped change corrects itself instead of leaving the board wrong for an inning.
- Reconnects unaided when Bluetooth drops, which it will.
